The Newtown Yoga Room offers classes in Iyengar Yoga & Mindfulness Meditation and is situated in South Newtown, within a few hundred metres of the boundaries of St Peters and Erskineville – an easy walk from Newtown and St Peters stations.
We teach a full range of yoga classes from Beginners courses through intermediate to experienced, and more specialised yoga classes such as Gentle Beginners & Individual Needs (individually tailored remedial program).
We also offer introduction to mindfulness meditation courses.
The style of yoga we teach is Iyengar yoga which is a type of hatha yoga and is one of the most widely known styles in the world.
B.K.S. Iyengar was the world’s foremost exponent of Hatha Yoga and spent a lifetime in the study, practice and teaching of this traditional science and art.
One of the features of Iyengar Yoga is that emphasis is placed on alignment in postures which engages and refines the skills of observation and reflection. The mind and body move in harmony with each other, and begin to function to their full potential. When needed props are used to adapt postures to the needs of the individual student.
Iyengar Yoga is based on yoga philosophy which dates back more than 2,000 years.
Mindfulness meditation in recent years has been the focus of much interest and positive scientific evaluation. It is essentially cultivating the observation power of the mind, a specific way of paying attention to our experience as it unfolds, with open, spacious and non-judgemental awareness. Mindfulness is cultivated formally in sitting meditation and is a skill we can bring to all facets of our lives. Bringing mindful awareness to your hatha yoga practice is particularly powerful combination, each complimenting and enhancing the other.
Principal teachers Jazz Eastman and Connie Hepworth have both been teaching for more than 2 decades and bring a wealth of experience, both in practice and teaching to their classes. Together they have been running the Newtown Yoga Room in its current location since 1996.
